Estancia Lago Strobel

The Estancia Lago Strobel fishing lodge is located on a beach right on legendary Lake Strobel. Besides the access to the big lake, the 79000 acre property encompasses numerous rich freshwater lagoons, 25 of which harbor a thriving population of rainbow trout. Famous Barrancoso river crosses the property from west to east over a length of about 23 km. The Estancia is adjacent to Quiroga, Quiroga Grande and Little Quiroga lakes that belong to the Rodriguez family, of cattle ranching fame since 1914

By 2015, the construction of a new fishing lodge of the same name was initiated to cater for anglers visiting these parts of Patagonia. The remote lodge was built in typical Patagonian style, with room and cozy comfort for up to 9 people, including all the necessary amenities like permanent power, hot running water, firewood heating in 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, a generous living room, the ubiquitous barbecue grill, 24-hour internet service and satellite TV.

The season goes from October to April and the best moments are the opening months of the season and the closing ones. The wind is almost ways present, normally March and April see the lightest winds, but this strongly subject to exceptions!

Lakes, lagoons and the Barrancoso River

Strobel lake is located in the western half of central Santa Cruz province, about 225 miles from the tourist town of El Calafate and about 50 miles from the RN40 at the level of the municipality of Gobernador Gregores. The lake itself has a water surface of about 25 square miles, is of volcanic origin and mainly fed by the waters of the Barrancoso river, its only tributary, rising in the west. The lakeshore has only little vegetation and is characterized by shallow sand or rubble beaches and rocky formations. The area has numerous prehistoric petroglyphs and rock engravings that date back to 9000 years ago.

The access to the lodge via the high plateau is quite incredible, but the passage has improved over the years, the off-road track has been gradually cleared to allow better passage. Coming from the National Road (RN40), anglers will head up via the Plateau of the Winds where you can find water-filled depressions that have been stocked with rainbow trout, their populations are thriving in this rich environment that offers great angling. Then Moro creek and the fabled Barrancoso river need to be crossed to finally reach the lakeside lodge. The high plateau is a bird sanctuary with many species present including the Maca Tobiano, a local endangered hooded grebe species. The plateau is among its preferred nesting and feeding grounds. Local wildlife includes guanacos, Patagonian gray foxes, rhea birds (nandu), among other species.

The fishing

The day starts early in the morning, around 5am, and after a succulent breakfast the adventure begins.

Fishing areas on the big lake include bays with deep drop-offs, bays with underwater vegetation as well as rocky bays.

Wind-worthy 8-wt. rods are preferred when fishing the lake complemented with a 6-wt. weight forward floating lines and intermediate sink tip lines with strong tippets are needed to land these monsters. Favorite flies include a variety of streamers, nymphs as well as dry flies. Local favorites are olive green streamers with some flash in it and you will always need a big Bedhead Prince in your fly box. A floating line must be prepared at all time, some times there are great result casting over the plants in the coast of the bay, and for the rivers and creeks is a must.

Keep in mind that all the spots in Strobel are 100% wade, is something you can not forget.
